St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney Australia
It was my last Sunday to spend in Sydney, Australia. There’s still a lot of places I’ve never been to and one of them was St. Mary’s Cathedral.
St. Mary’s Cathedral is the largest church in Australia and is just walking distance from St. James station. The facade is very similar to the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne. The design was very European and you’ll get the feeling that it was built around the 1800s when you get inside. Unfortunately, I was not able to take some photos of the interior since they don’t allow photography inside the church.
It was really just my goal to take a photograph of St. Mary’s Cathedral. But I also got fortunate to attend a full mass celebrated by Cardinal George Pell, the Archbishop of Sydney. There were only a handful of masses in which I’ve been to where the priest used a pulpit to give his sermon and this was one of them. The songs were very traditional and I couldn’t follow. The church was so big that those people sitting on both sides behind the pillars couldn’t see the priest so it was equipped with large monitors and cameras (one was focused on the pulpit and one was focused on the altar).
